Welcome to the DTS page, DTS (also known as DTS Digital Surround) is a surround
sound technology used in many home cinema systems that is similar to Dolby,
it is however not the standard surround sound technology so is usually an
additional option on some DVD's.
DTS offers 5.1 channels in the same way the Dolby Digital does but it offers
higher data rates so lots of enthusiasts believe it to have a higher quality
of sound, the problem with the higher data rates though is that they take up
more room on the DVD so many film makers choose not to include the DTS surround
sound. If you have DVD's that have the DTS surround sound then buying a home
cinema system that supports DTS surround sound will enable you to hear the films
in the DTS sound, whether you can tell the difference between that and the standard
Dolby Digital sound is another matter though as you will need high quality speakers
to notice any difference.
